The late Virginia Grace has been free with her knowledge of Rhodian amphorae, as has Grazia Semeraro for eastern Roman fine wares, for which I am grateful. William Di Paolo is responsible for the pottery drawings done in 1990. Michael Putnam for providing facilities to study the pottery housed at the American Academy. The work was conducted during a stay at the British School at Rome in June 1990. The report, that I was preparing in 2012, was never completed as the author of the book left for the United States and never got back to me with the relevant contextual information. The pottery thus shows continuous occupation of the area and often, apparently, relates to structural modifications such as the insertion of a thermopolium. The excavation thus provides a useful date for this ware, as it does for the Baetican Dressel 20 amphora stamp of L. Indeed, the African Red Slip ware fragment was presumably imported shortly before the destruction of the site. Ceramics appear in quantity from the second century B.C., to continue right down to the eruption of A.D. For instance, none of the local Pompeian Black Glaze ware, of later fourth or third century date, was found.
There is then very little that dates between the sixth century and the late third or second century B.C., when, we may suppose, the House of Sallust was built. would appear to come from a stratified context (pit?) cut into the pyroclastic deposits below the later house. Though some finds are quite clearly residual, the ceramics from.
The quantity of sixth century material is interesting and large enough to suggest occupation of the area at that time.
